Bachelor Thesis: How Representative Is Measured Network Traffic: Individual Browsing Behavior And Its Technical Manifestation

Title:

How Representative Is Measured Network Traffic: Individual Browsing Behavior And Its Technical Manifestation

Description:

In this thesis, we show that individual browsing behaviour influences the statistical properties of measured web traffic by analyzing data sets collected from 14 real world users over two months. We categorized their browsing behaviour by their privacy attitude and frequently visited websites. We then extracted and evaluated features from the data sets, which allowed us to compare the statistical properties of each browsing behaviour and user. Our hypothesis was that browsing behaviour does not influence the technical manifestation, however, our results show that the attitude towards privacy and advertisement influences the statistical properties of the data sets. We were consistently able to distinguish between non-adblocking and adblocking users based on their statistical data. Another key finding is that users who do not use any adblocking or privacy-preserving tool show very similar properties, regardless of their different browsing behaviour. If this result can be consolidated with larger data sets it could significantly lessen the burden for machine learning applications in regards to data collection. Because the majority of Internet users belong to this type of user and could be potentially be represented by a considerably smaller sample size.
