Context-aware Battery Reduction for Mobile Applications in Ad-hoc
In this thesis, we show that contextual information can be used to reduce the energy drain of the Advertise and Discover process used to setup ad-hoc networking connections between mobile devices. Based on the work by Eichinger et al., we used their prototype mobile application affinity and proposed a new way to handle the Advertise and Discover process. With the help of contextual information we are able to reduce the amount of time the Advertise and Discovery process has to be active by determining when the Advertise and Discover process is unlikely to yield results and then pausing it. We planned to test our implementation in four experiments in both laboratory and field, yet were only able to conduct the laboratory environment experiments due to the Corona pandemic. Results for these experiments showed promising energy saving of up to 82%. Due to the nature of the conducted experiments these results can be seen as a lower bound, depicting the most optimal scenario for our approach.
