Master Thesis: Implementation and Evaluation of Privacy-Aware Geofence Verifications
Implementation and Evaluation of Privacy-Aware Geofence Verifications
Privacy of data is a very hot topic in today’s world. While security breaches increase constantly, lawmakers try to align with the current technological developments and create laws such as GDPR to mitigate further problems. In this scope, data protection not only saves lots of money, but also increases the trust of users. Location data is no exception and it shouldn’t be accessed by malicious people. Instead of focusing on securing the data, keeping less or even no data is another way to protect it. So that, the user’s privacy won’t be threatened at all. Yet, having no data doesn’t necessarily mean that the data won’t be processed. Instead, data can be processed by using some approaches such as zero-knowledge-proof, trusted 3rd parties, hashing, or encryption algorithms.
The thesis shows that it is possible to achieve privacy-aware geofence verification by using a variety of different approaches. This way, no location data will be kept as it is on server-side. These approaches will be analyzed and then extended to fit the test environments. Finally, results will be elaborated and tested to achieve a feasibility analysis for mobile usage for different solutions.
