Master Thesis: Reducing Location Tampering in Indoor Positioning Systems

Title:

Reducing Location Tampering in Indoor Positioning Systems

Description:

The interest in Indoor Positioning Systems has significantly increased in recent years. This technology allows locating people or assets indoor, where other mechanisms such as Global Positioning System are not efficient. The popularity of the indoor positioning increased due to the opportunities it offers for new applications, such as in indoor advertisement and marketing. Another more sensitive scenario of the system application is the indoor Location-based Access Control mechanism which restricts the information access to a defined area or building. For such delicate applications, tampering the location provided by the positioning system can have serious security implication.

The aim of this thesis is to build a Secure Indoor Position System that prevents location fal- sification and which enables new applications of this technology. For this purpose, the most suitable technology and techniques for the desired system will be selected, the vulnerabilities that can affect it analyzed, and countermeasures proposed. The most appropriate countermea- sure will be implemented, and the security of the resulting system evaluated in a location-based access control mechanism.
