Designing a User-friendly Interface for the Definition of Context-aware Privacy Policies



Due to progress in the development of mobile communication, location-based services, which

provide a multitude of services through the user’s positional data, have recently taken on im-

portance. Those location-based services can be divided into two groups: The reactive services,

on the one hand, that are explicitly requested by the user. Then the current location of the

mobile device is send to the corresponding server. Pro-active services, on the other hand, work

through continuous, automatic location tracking in the background, and react to such events as

entering and leaving geographical zones. Today’s technologies in mobile devices are enabling

precise location determination whenever and wherever. Many location-based services, such as

navigational systems, provide a signicant increment value for many users and are therefore

not to be missed from everyday life. Nevertheless, those services also increase privacy concerns

of consumers because misuse of personal data by public and private facilities has increased, as

well. Missing trust and limited possibilities to control, especially while using proactive ser-

vices on mobile devices - which data is send when and why - are posing a central problem

when it comes to the acceptance of location-based services. A special privacy-framework

would offer a solution by providing individual device-based privacy policies. Hereby the user

gets the option to decide when, where and in how precise his location information is sent to

a external service. The generation and administration of such policies, however, should not be

too complex and opaque for the ordinary user. That is why new privacy policies should be

simple, intuitive, and possible to be created in a reasonable amount of time. The purpose of

this thesis, therefore, is to pose a draft and implementation for a user-friendly administration

of individual privacy policies for mobile location-based services on the Android platform. To

test the acceptance and applicability of such policies, the user interface was integrated into an

already existing geofencing system. The evaluation has shown that the acceptance of individu-

al device-based privacy policies for location-based services in connection with a user-friendly

and efcient administration has been very high.
