Indoor Mapping using BLE-Beacons for Policy Tooling.


Most service providers and users desire more privacy and security to control access to their resources. Therefore, access control solutions offer service providers and users possibilities to define access restrictions to these resources. The user may express access restrictions such as who can access the resources, when and from where. These information will be included in the access rule or access policy. However, the location requirement is difficult to achieve in an indoor environment. Determining the user’s location inside of buildings is difficult because the GPS does not work properly in indoor situations due the weak reception. Moreover, cur- rent access control solutions do not possess access requirements for restricting access to such sensitive data, which is indoor locations.This thesis presents a graphical web interface based on OpenStreetMap, called Indoor Map- ping Web Interface, which is designed and realized to combine indoor maps and floor plans of several real-world objects such as hospitals, airports, department stores and more. Further- more, it allows and helps the service providers and users to take into consideration the indoor location while restricting access to sensitive resources. By placing Bluetooth Low Energy bea- cons inside buildings and also placing the beacons on the indoor maps, the web interface will ensure having the indoor location information and storing them in the database. Using the stored indoor location information in the database will enable to express access control restric- tions especially in respect of indoor location and Bluetooth Low Energy beacon IDs. Moreover, the indoor mapping web interface enables and ensures the accurate determination of a user’s position even in indoor situations and as a result helps fulfill the location requirement which might be included in the access policy.

The Indoor Mapping Web Interface was evaluated by defining several scenarios to test the usability and the validity of the policies. The evaluation shows that the web interface performs well and helps extending the access control system compared to traditional systems.
