Description:

Context-based services became an irreplaceable feature with the rise of smartphones and tablets. They integrate seamlessly with the day-to-day life of people searching for points of interest or information based on their context. Proactive location-reminder applications are used to notify their users if they enter specific regions, called geofences. Proactive context-based systems provide means to notify their users upon the occurrence of specific events. The reactive counterparts have to be manually requested to provide their services. Recent advancements not only use single geofences, but combine them to so-called scenarios. Geofences can not only be spatially sequenced but also temporally. Many context-based systems are designed for mobile clients. This puts constrains on the system because mobile devices have limited computing power as well as energy. To overcome these limitations new architectural designs were created that put parts or all of the processing of context into the infrastructure. The design and implementation of a proactive, context-based messaging system is the goal of this thesis. In the beginning fundamentals of context-based systems and the state-of-the-art are described. Then the architecture of the Geofencing System is demonstrated, which is the basis for the Contextfencing System proposed in this thesis. Thereafter the design and the implementation details of the Contextfencing System are explained. Then the evaluation is shown.
