Global distributed messaging systems with the publisher/subscriber paradigm have become a crucial topic in recent years with the growing importance of the Internet of Things. It does not only include web developments, such as social networks or news feeds, but also process automation in various industries. These systems allow the subscription to certain topics, users, groups or items in order to receive information in form of messages. The content type of these messages is not predefined.

Location-dependent messaging provides specific geographic targeting of messages and allows the retrieve of messages for a specific geographical region. This includes also the distribution of the messages to subscribers. This specific targeting and distribution of messages to a certain region e.g. "New York City - Downtown area" can be very important for advertising, information sharing or social networking. Scalable and distributed system architecture for asynchronous communication is needed in order to provide this functionality to a high number of location-dependent users.

The main objective of this thesis is to design, develop and evaluate an open, scalable and distributed location-dependent messaging system. Users will be able to subscribe and publish to certain geographical regions in order to receive or send geographically targeted messages. In addition, the system will be able to handle a great number of location-dependent messages at the same time. To overcome these challenges, the messaging system will take advantage of state-of-the-art technologies for distributed and scalable database systems.

  • Interest to work in the field of Messaging Systems and Location-dependent Services
  • Proficiency in programming
