Master Thesis: Design and Implementation of Energy-Efficient Positioning Algorithms for Proactive Location-Based Services
Title:
Design and Implementation of Energy-Efficient Positioning Algorithms for Proactive Location-Based Services
Description:
From an increasing number and popularity of location-based applications, the proactive applications are the ones that will most likely succeed in the long term. Certainly they have to continuously keep track of a device's position, which usually results in a high energy demand. Previous APIs for positioning on mobile devices (focus is on Android) are, concerning the implementation of proactive location-based applications, cumbersome and inefficient in terms of energy consumption. Main goal of this thesis is to analyse the characteristics of different positioning methods (GPS, WiFi, Cell-ID) first and then, concerning energy consumption, accuracy of positioning, availability and time-to-first-fix (TTFF) develop and realize own ideas and concepts for algorithmic optimizations. The quantitative improvements in energy-efficiency as well as the underlying concepts and its implementation have to be documented in English.
Challenges:
- Strong practical relevance (Implementation on Android)
- Algorithmic creativity
Prerequisites:
- Proficiency in object-oriented programming
- Ideally first experience with Android or other mobile platforms
