Overview

Students who have successfully finished this module have an overview of current and future concepts for the World Wide Web. They have developed an understanding of protocols, languages and technologies for the Web environment ranging from HTTP and HTML to RDF and OWL. Additionally, they are aware of the principles of designing protocols and languages for the Web and how the overall trend for the future Web looks like (Semantic Web). In addition to the technological evolution of the Web, the students will also gain insights into its effects in personal lives, business environments, as well as human societies in general (Web Science).

The course is principally designed to impart:

  • technical skills: 40%
  • method skills: 30%
  • system skills: 20%
  • social skills: 10%

The module starts with an introduction to the classical technologies of the World Wide Web and its evolution during the last decades. In practical exercises, the students will learn the development with web technologies and will understand the power as well as the shortcomings of each technology. In the first half of this module, they will work with classical technologies such as HTTP, HTML, DNS, JavaScript, CSS, Web Services and will understand their interdependencies. In the second part, more recent and novel technologies and concepts will be introduced like RESTful API, HTML 5, RDF, Linked Data, OWL, modern Content Management Systems, OAuth, WebID, WebOS, Firefox OS. The module will conclude with looking at the effects of the Web on personal, business, and societal life focusing on social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

The topics of this module are taught in a classical lecture, which also envisages a related discussion between students and lecturer. Selected topics are further covered in an exercise course with frequent assignments. Each assignment contains several problems, which are to be solved by the students. During practical lessons, the solutions are then presented and discussed.

Examination

During the week of February 17th - 21st, 2014 an oral examination is offered, which lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. The examination is graded according to the rules of the respective examination regulations.

It is required to register for the oral examination via the QISPOS system. The registration is scheduled to open on January 7th, 2014. The examination is rated as failed in cases of absence without valid excuse. This does not have an impact on possibly contradicting rules of the respective examination regulation.
