Description
Mobile Services are usually offered over a mobile communications network like UMTS and requested from mobile devices like ordinary mobile phones, smartphones, or laptops. Compared to conventional information and communication services as known from the Fixed Internet, Mobile Services are exposed to several restrictions, for example, limited bandwidth and increased latency, reduced computational power and memory of mobile devices, changing network addresses as a result of the users’ mobility, and many more. On the other hand, however, they open up a broad range of new and sophisticated applications in areas such as navigation, context-awareness, or ubiquitous and pervasive computing, to name only a few.
The module starts with a brief introduction into the
fundamentals of mobile networks and an overview of related
infrastructures of GSM, UMTS, and other networks. This includes a
short discussion about the particular problems these networks imply
and a general overview of the special features they offer, for
example, regarding the different types of mobility support and
associated mechanisms. After that, the module introduces different
service platforms and infrastructures and demonstrates their
realization and operation. The following services and service
platforms are covered:
- Cellular Networks (GSM, GPRS,
UMTS, LTE)
- SMS and MMS
- Mobile Internet
- IMS services
- Advanced Services (Mobile Instant Messaging)
- Location-based Services
- IP Multimedia Subsystem
The module concludes with an overview and discussion of latest trends and developments.
Target Group
This course is offered as compulsory course
(Wahlpflichtfach) to master and diploma students of the following
programs:
- Computer Science (Informatik, MSc.)
- Computer Engineering (Technische Informatik, MSc.)
- ICT Innovation (MSc.)
- Business Informatics (Wirtschaftsinformatik, MSc.)

Registration
Number of oral exams in summer term 2020 is strictly limited to 60.
To register for a oral exam, it is first required to
pre-register at

The pre-registration is open from April 7,
2020 at 00:00 until April 27, 2020 at 18:00.
Pre-registration is not based on first-come first-serve. In case more than 60 students want to register for a verbal exam, a selection process with waiting lists according to AllgStuPO § 36 will be applied. See AllgStuPO § 36 for more details. Students will be notified via email within 2 days after the pre-registration period ends whether they can register for the verbal exam (via QISPOS or exam office) or are put on the waiting list. Pre-registration is obligatory in order to get into the selection process.
More details about the exam registration process will be announced during the first lecture.
Examination
The oral exams are conducted at the end of the lecture period between July 16 and July 24, 2020. Each oral exam lasts between 20 and 25 minutes.
An oral exam is rated as failed in case of absence without valid excuse. This does not have an impact on possibly contradicting rules of the respective examination regulation.
