Online Social Networks Project (ST 2012)


  • First lecture of the Online Social Networks Project is on 24th of April 2012.


The module consists of two parts – a seminar and a practical project. The participants start with getting familiar with their assigned topics within the research area of social networks and preparing an extended presentation (20 minutes) about fundamentals and a live demonstration in actual software, as well as a written report (6 pages in English).

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Fundamentals of Online Social Networks
  • Mobile Services and Applications (Android)
  • Trends in Mobile Communities
  • Technologies and Standards for Social Networks
  • Integration of 3rd Party APIs and Mashups

During the project, the team will cope with fundamental topics in practice, such as software design and implementation, interfaces and software development processes. The project tasks will also be in the research area of social networks and mobile applications.

Target Group

This compulsory course (Wahlpflichtfach) addresses Bachelor, Master and Diploma students of

  • Computer Science (Informatik)
  • Computer Engineering (Technische Informatik)
  • Business Informatics (Wirtschaftsinformatik)
  • Compulsory Elective in other degree programs possible if course is not full

Final grades for the module will be composed of grades on partial performances of the seminar and project. As a prerequisite, each partial performance has to be passed to successfully finish the whole module. Basis for grading is the following evaluation scheme:

  • Seminar speech 15%
  • Seminar report 25%
  • Participation in project 20%
  • Implementation 30%
  • Project documentation 10%

After being accepted as participant, all students have to register at their examination authority to take part in the exams. Otherwise no grades can be given for this course.


Students with substantial knowledge of Java or another object-oriented programming language can register for this course by sending an email including name, field of study, semester and their experiences with object-oriented programming to and .
