Semantic Platform for Context-aware Services


Conventional positioning approaches for Location-based Services (LBS) such as those provided by Google and Apple, are solely driven by geometric spatial data. Especially in proactive LBS scenarios, in which users are notified as soon as they reach a certain area, locations are mostly defined by geofences and do not incorporate any further information from the semantics of the location, such as the points of interest in the vicinity or more detailed information about the district the user is in.

Last semester, a Semantic Positioning System [1] with a Restaurant Recommender Service prototype was implemented that enhances classic positioning methods by semantic features. The main objective of this semester's project is to enhance this system by a Semantic Platform that supports various Context-aware Services including 3rd party functionality. The applicability of this platform should be demonstrated by a "child tracking" app that uses the Positioning Enabler Platform and the OpenMobileNetwork in order to notify the user "whenever his daughter leaves school".


  • Research in the field of Linked Data, Context-aware Computing and Proactive Location-based Services
  • Enhance the existing Semantic Positioning System [2] by a Platform for realizing Semantic Context-aware Services including 3rd party functionality

    • Automatically map locations of relevance (e.g., place, user profile, relations, other context) to Linked Data
    • Design a semantic user profile that is extendable by each context-aware service

  • Create standardized interface between the Positioning Enabler Platform and the OpenMobileNetwork
  • Develop a "child tracking" app


  • Interest in the field of Semantic Web and Linked Data

  • Experience in web development and technologies such as REST, HTTP and JSON
